A portrait of the actor Jame Dean, made in the year of his death, uses the dark shadows of a stairwell to frame him in a diamond-shaped patch of light. Dean's image was full of contraditions: tough and sensitive, boyish and manly, polite and wild. This Dennis Stock photograph echoes this in its split between light and dark, face only half visible, head shown both straight on and profiled in the shadow cast on the wall.
